Geographic information

Welcome to the fascinatinating region Far North. The region lies between 10 and 13 degrees north latitude and stretches over 600 km from the region North to Lake Chad. Its capital Maroua counts around 300.000 inhabitans. It shares its western boundary with Nigeria, the eastern boundary with Chad. The Far North is the most densely populated region of Cameroon (2,553,389 inhabitants in an area of 34 263 km ²).

The mountain chain of the Mandara Mountains (up to 1500 m) stretches along the Nigerian border and goes in the South over into the Atlantika Mountains. The impressive eroded volcanic vents in the area around the village Rhumsiki are characteristc - a tourist attraction point. The Mayos, usually dry water beds, are characteristic for the region.

The eastern part of the Far North region, however, is dominated by the vast plains of the Logone-level. The Logone River forms the border with Chad in the east. At the height of Kousseri it flows along with the Chari and flows north into Lake Chad.

Further north, in the transition zone to the Sahel zone, the landscape becomes more and more arid.

The agriculture sector is dominated by the cultivation of cotton, millet and peanuts. The Lake Maga near the town of Yagoua was artificially created in the 1960s to supply the region with water so that even the cultivation of rice is possible.

The Far North fascinates in particular through its biodiversity. Visit the natural wildlife reserves like the Waza National Parc or Kalamaloué National Parc. Here you can find a variety of animal species native in Africa. During a safari you can see elephants, giraffes, monkeys, antelopes and lions in their natural environment. The Far North is also for bird lovers a special destination.
